SELF INDULGENT NOTES, THOUGHTS, and USELESS INFORMATIONS ABOUT “JOKEY JINGLES”(or ‘liner notes’…OnLiner notes? Ha!)
This is an interesting project.
First of all, it’s covers, which up until now we’ve only done live.
It’s our fourth “album”, and our first released exclusively online.
More interesting still?!
In a funny way it’s also a look at the way we’ve approached composing,
arranging and mixing across our five years (woahnelly, how has it
been five years?). Though it isn’t presented chronologically, and
much of the final recording was completed fairly recently, it’s
something of a survey (if you will). Chronologically, “Little Girls”
was the first cover we ever worked on (and the last to finish getting
recorded). “Like A Prayer” and “Worms Make Dirt” were next, right
about when we recorded “This Is An Adventure”. We finished “Toxic”
this summer (09) getting ready for Nerdapalooza, and the terrifying
“Blue Rosebuds” last. And we think you can sort of see a progression.
Oddly, “Worms” is the oldest finished recording, as we made it for a
seemingly ill-fated comp about three years ago.
The choice of songs is interesting, too. It’s something of a
microcosm for our perpetually bi-polar nature. You’ve got two of the
biggest pop songs ever surrounding three relatively obscure tracks.
But we love all of these songs. But there is a difference. Oingo
Boingo is probably our greatest collective musical influence. The
Aquabats are a close second. The Residents are more of a musical
influence on Perfect Jimmy and Marty, but they are arguably one of
greatest artistic and theatrical influences on us collectively.
The discerning listener might ask – where are Jokey Jingles Volumes 1
and 2? Those are the lost volumes that have all the Rush, They Might
Be Giants, and Journey covers on them…
Remember: “Dodongo Dislikes Smoke!”
